First of all, it is important to understand exactly what strep throat is. It is caused by streptococcal (aka strep) bacteria. It is also important to understand that there are numerous types of throat problems, and while it's easy to blame the most well known strep bacteria for it, that's not always the case. There are many other kinds of throat problems that may somtimes have similar symptoms.
The symptoms of strep throat are:
- Pain when trying to swallow
- Fever of over 101F
- A sore throat that appeared suddenly, as if out of nowhere
- Yellow and/or white spots on the back of a brightly colored red throat.
- Other side effects, such as headaches, stomache aches, vomiting, etc.
Strep throat IS contagious, so make sure to stay home and stay away from other people. You don't want to make others sick! To be properly diagnosed with strep, you should go to your doctor so that he can perform the rapid strep test. While going to the doctor isn't 100% necessary, it sure does help.
