The BIG Question: How Long Does Strep Throat Last?

Strep throat is a very common problem nowadays. It comes on and off sometimes, and every time you get it, you feel miserable. The question of "how long does strep throat last" can actually vary from time to time. Average time to get completely recovery can be 7 to 10 days. Sometimes just a few days is enough, however.

As soon as you have figured out that you have strep throat, immediately start taking action. If you want to heal the natural way, gargling water mixed with baking soda mixed in the water is also very beneficial. If the pain is too much, you can take antibiotics as well, but isn't required, unlike commonly thought. As soon as you start taking the steps to healing the strep throat, you should already start feeling better within 2-4 days. Continue the gargling and/or antibiotics for at least a week longer though, until you are 100% sure that you are well.

  1. This is not true. Strep may go away on its own, however, if you leave strep throat untreated you may be contagious for up to 2-4 weeks, beginning the day BEFORE you start to show symptoms. Do yourself and everyone else a favor and get treatment. In addition, untreated strep throat can lead to other more severe health problems that may affect your heart and other organs. (I know this firsthand, as I have previously developed a heart murmur and infections in both eyes as a direct result of strep throat). If you suspect you have strep, get checked out.

  2. I second Lisa's comment. If you have or think you have strep see a doctor immediately! I was hospitalized for 3 days because of trying to do just home remedies. The strep throat untreated will begin to spread to other organs. I was diagnosed with myopericarditis (inflammation of the sac around the heart). The strep throat was attacking the pericardium (defensive sac around the heart to protect it from things like strep throat). I had 2 cardiologist and 4 nurses working on me, thinking I was having a heart attack at the age of 25!! Strep throat is no joke and a quick stop at the doctors will help you get rid of the bacteria and stop the spread. I appreciate the information on this blog but please check with a doctor before taking advice from a blog or self diagnosis, it may save your life one day. Thank you for your information Ben!

  4. Kelly flath how can you demand these women to shut up when they are not giving medical advice as a doctor? They are speaking from personal experience. secondly, they encouraged the reader to see a doctor. you look too old in your picture to act so childishly

  5. This really is no joke! I have strep right now and it's been since Monday and I still can't swallow. I also have white patche's all over my tonsils. The doctor told me that salt and water is a temporary relief unless you have a high tolerance for pain i wouldn't suggest home remedies. Get the antibiotics the doctor gives you and eat warm soup and Popsicles. Lots of rest! Another thing that helped was my heating pad if you get stomach aches. It really is a horrible illness :/

    1. POPSICLES?!!!!!

Did the damn doctor give you that advice?!!!

Seeing as strep is a bad bacteria refined sugar will only help it grow and sugar will cripple your immune system.

      Smh.

  7. Strep throat is an infection of the throat which is caused by the bacteria known as group A Streptococcus, abbreviated as GAS. This infection is contagious and can easily spread from a person to person making people around you vulnerable. It’s particularly important to know what the infection is and how you can keep yourself and your family safe. Strep throat is contagious in nature but its contagion part is tricky. The symptoms of strep throat appear 2 to 5 days after the GAS bacteria have infected you. Before that you don’t have the symptoms of strep throat and don’t know if you are infected. It is during this time period that strep throat is particularly contagious. So, once the symptoms of strep throat start appearing, you have to limit your contact with friends and family in order to avoid the spread of infection. Similarly, if you are not taking antibiotics for strep throat, you will be contagious for 2 to 3 weeks. However, if you start taking antibiotics for the infection, the contagion factor of the strep throat starts to reduce and you no longer remain contagious 24 hours after taking the first dose of antibiotics.
